Car crashes are the leading cause of preventable death for teens, and DriveitHOME, a program of the National Safety Council, is committed to keeping new drivers safe by getting parents and caregivers more involved as their teens learn to drive. In partnership with Honda, DriveitHOME is offering parents, caregivers and stakeholders a free toolkit for this month’s National Teen Driver Safety Week Oct. 15-21.
This toolkit offers resources on topics like speeding and distracted driving to help parents protect their new drivers behind the wheel. You can help spread the word about this important observance by sharing this toolkit with your workers through your health and wellness programs.
Inexperience is the biggest issue for teen drivers. Since they haven’t spent much time behind the wheel, they don’t know what to expect or how to react in different driving situations. That creates risks for both new drivers and other road users. In 2021, National Safety Council research shows:
- More than 2,000 teen drivers were killed in crashes
- More than 5,000 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers
By improving the skills of our newest drivers, we can lower the risks for everyone on our roads.
Fortunately, parents and caregivers are the No. 1 influence on teen drivers and their driving habits, so getting involved in the driver education process can make a big difference. This free National Teen Driver Safety Week toolkit makes the job easy, with posters to promote safe driving habits, videos with tips for driving lessons and the latest stats on teen driver safety.
