October 2021 Newsletter: Take Teen(ie) Driver Safety Steps

Going the Distance

One way to ensure the success of your road safety efforts is to go that extra mile. Over-deliver.

A perfect time to do that is during National Teen Driver Safety Week (Oct. 17-23). Some of your employees are parents of teen drivers – or will be soon. They face many of the same driver safety challenges you confront regularly at work: impairment, speeding, distracted driving, drowsy driving and seat belt use.

Take some time to engage your workforce with free resources from the National Safety Council. Through its DriveitHOME program, NSC offers:

  • Posters to display in the workplace
  • A ready-made safety talk on teen safe driving
  • Infographics and social media videos
  • The New Driver Deal template

Fill out this form, get free resources and get the word out on the importance of teen safe driving to help keep your employees and their loved ones safe.

Here is why a little extra-effort matters: Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old). In 2019, data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates:

  • 16% of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes had alcohol in their system
  • 27% of teen drivers involved in fatal crashes were speeding at the time of the crash
  • 45% of teen drivers who died in crashes were unbuckled

Share these materials from NHTSA and focus on the Rules of the Road.

You’re the safety coach at work. Enable your employees to be the safety coach at home.

New Name, Same Safety

Maybe the banner headline will grab you: Violators Will Be Toad! Maybe the colorful display of graphics will catch your eye. Or maybe you will be interested in the Halloween safety tips for drivers and pedestrians.

This month, we’re rolling out something new: our monthly Traffic Tabloid. Perhaps you will recognize it. We’ve put a new name on our old Toilet Tabloids, and we’ve updated this popular, free resource with a fresh new look, too.

We plan to deliver the same great traffic safety messages in a new format we hope you will use in more ways than ever before. Sure, you can print and display each issue in bathrooms at your workplace, just as you did in the past. But now you might also consider downloading and sharing it on your intranet safety page, distributing it during an in-person safety meeting or emailing it to employees who work from home.

We’ve added a QR code to make it easier for anyone in your organization to quickly access the Traffic Tabloid each month. Just use the camera on your phone to scan the code, save a copy of the PDF file or print it out and display wherever you see fit!

Each month, you will find our newest Traffic Tabloid on our website here. The October issue is live now: Halloween Safety: Violators Will Be Toad!
